Description
This Gram stain analyzes fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity, which is the space within the abdomen that contains the intestines, stomach, and liver. It is primarily used to diagnose bacterial peritonitis, a serious infection of the peritoneum. The test is particularly important for patients with ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen) or those suspected of having abdominal infections. Quick identification of bacteria through this test allows for prompt initiation of appropriate antibiotic therapy, which can be life-saving in cases of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients or in postoperative infections.
