Description
The Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a standard screening procedure used to assess the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnant women. It is typically performed between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. The test involves the patient drinking a sweet glucose solution containing 50 grams of glucose. After one hour, a blood sample is taken to measure the blood sugar level. This test doesn’t require fasting and can be done at any time of the day. If the blood glucose level is above a certain threshold (typically 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L), it indicates a higher risk of gestational diabetes. Women who screen positive on this test are usually recommended to undergo a more comprehensive Glucose Tolerance Test for a definitive diagnosis. Early detection of gestational diabetes is crucial for proper management and to prevent complications for both mother and baby.
