Description
The Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test measures the level of follicle-stimulating hormone in the blood. FSH is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a crucial role in the reproductive system of both men and women. In women, FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles and regulates the menstrual cycle. In men, it promotes sperm production. This test is essential for assessing fertility, diagnosing disorders of sexual development, and evaluating pituitary gland function. It’s particularly useful in diagnosing conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), primary ovarian insufficiency, and hypogonadism. In menopausal women, elevated FSH levels confirm the transition to menopause. The FSH test is often performed in conjunction with other hormone tests to provide a comprehensive picture of reproductive health and function.
