Description
The Cystatin-C serum test measures the level of cystatin C, a protein produced by all nucleated cells, in the blood. This test is used as an alternative or complement to creatinine-based tests for assessing kidney function. Cystatin C is particularly useful in evaluating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and is less affected by factors like muscle mass, making it more accurate in certain patient populations such as the elderly, children, or those with reduced muscle mass. The test helps in early detection of kidney dysfunction and monitoring of chronic kidney disease.
