Description

This test measures the level of complement component 3 (C3) in the blood. C3 is a crucial protein in the complement system, which is part of the body’s innate immune defense. Low C3 levels can indicate ongoing complement activation due to various conditions. The test is used to diagnose and monitor autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), glomerulonephritis, and certain types of vasculitis. It’s also useful in assessing liver function, as C3 is produced in the liver. Serial measurements of C3 can help track disease activity and response to treatment in conditions where complement activation plays a role.
