Chromogranin A, Plasma

Description

This test measures the levels of chromogranin A, a protein released by neuroendocrine cells, in the blood plasma. Elevated levels can indicate the presence of neuroendocrine tumors, such as carcinoid tumors or pheochromocytomas. The test is used for both diagnosis and monitoring of these types of cancers. It’s particularly useful when combined with other diagnostic methods, as it can detect tumors that may be missed by conventional imaging techniques. However, certain medications and conditions can also affect chromogranin A levels, so results must be interpreted carefully in the context of the patient’s overall clinical picture.
