Description
This test measures the levels of pseudocholinesterase, also known as butyrylcholinesterase, in the blood serum. The enzyme is primarily produced by the liver and plays a role in metabolizing certain drugs, including some anesthetics and muscle relaxants. Low levels can indicate liver disease or certain genetic variations. The test is particularly important for assessing potential risks associated with anesthesia, as individuals with low pseudocholinesterase levels may experience prolonged paralysis after receiving certain muscle relaxants during surgery.
