Description
The Calcitonin (Thyrocalcitonin) Serum test measures the level of calcitonin hormone in the blood. Calcitonin is produced by C cells in the thyroid gland and plays a role in calcium regulation. This test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor medullary thyroid cancer, a rare type of thyroid cancer that originates from C cells. Elevated calcitonin levels can indicate the presence or recurrence of this cancer. The test may also be used to evaluate other conditions affecting calcium metabolism, such as hyperparathyroidism or certain neuroendocrine tumors. Regular monitoring of calcitonin levels can help assess the effectiveness of treatment in patients with medullary thyroid cancer.
