Description
The Bullous Pemphigoid 180 test is a specific immunological assay designed to detect autoantibodies against the BP180 antigen, also known as collagen XVII. This protein is a crucial component of the hemidesmosome, which anchors the epidermis to the dermis. In bullous pemphigoid, an autoimmune blistering skin disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks BP180, leading to the formation of large, tense blisters on the skin. This test is highly specific for bullous pemphigoid and helps differentiate it from other autoimmune blistering diseases. The levels of BP180 antibodies can also correlate with disease activity and may be used to monitor treatment response. A positive result, especially when combined with clinical findings, strongly supports the diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid.
