Description
The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test is a key indicator of kidney health and overall metabolic function. Urea is a waste product formed from the breakdown of proteins, which is normally filtered out by the kidneys. Elevated BUN levels can indicate impaired kidney function, as the kidneys are not effectively removing urea from the blood. However, BUN levels can also be affected by other factors such as dehydration, high-protein diets, or certain medications. This test is often performed alongside other renal function tests, like creatinine, to provide a comprehensive assessment of kidney health. It’s particularly useful in monitoring chronic kidney disease, assessing the effectiveness of dialysis, and evaluating overall hydration status.
