Description
The Beta 2 Microglobulin Serum test measures the levels of beta-2 microglobulin, a small protein, in the blood. This protein is found on the surface of many cells, particularly white blood cells. Elevated levels can indicate various conditions, including kidney disease, certain types of cancer (especially multiple myeloma and lymphomas), and autoimmune disorders. In kidney disease, high levels suggest reduced kidney function as the protein is normally filtered out by healthy kidneys. For cancer patients, particularly those with multiple myeloma or lymphomas, this test is crucial for staging, prognosis, and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Regular testing can help track disease progression and guide treatment decisions.
