Description
The AST (SGOT) test measures the levels of aspartate aminotransferase in the blood. This enzyme is found primarily in the liver but also in other tissues. Elevated levels can indicate liver damage or disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. The test is often performed as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel or liver function tests. Results are interpreted alongside other liver enzymes and clinical symptoms for accurate diagnosis.
