Description
The Apolipoprotein – B test measures the levels of apolipoprotein B, the primary protein found in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol particles. Each atherogenic particle contains one molecule of apoB, making this test a direct measure of the number of potentially harmful cholesterol particles in the bloodstream. High levels of apoB are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. This test is particularly useful in assessing cardiovascular risk in patients with normal LDL cholesterol levels but elevated triglycerides, and in monitoring the effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapies.
