Description

This test is designed to detect the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in peritoneal fluid, which is found in the abdominal cavity. It’s primarily used to diagnose tuberculous peritonitis, a form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis affecting the peritoneum. The test involves staining the peritoneal fluid sample and examining it under a microscope for the presence of acid-fast bacilli. While a positive result can indicate the presence of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a negative result doesn’t rule out infection. This test is often used in conjunction with culture tests, ADA levels, and molecular methods for a comprehensive diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis, especially in regions with high tuberculosis prevalence.
