Description
This test is designed to detect the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in endotracheal (ET) secretions. It’s primarily used to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis in intubated or mechanically ventilated patients. The test involves staining the ET secretion sample and examining it under a microscope for the presence of acid-fast bacilli. This method is particularly useful for patients who cannot produce sputum samples. While a positive result can indicate the presence of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a negative result doesn’t rule out infection. This test is often used in conjunction with culture tests and molecular methods for a comprehensive diagnosis of respiratory mycobacterial infections in critically ill patients.
