Description
This test is designed to detect the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in bronchial wash samples, which are obtained during bronchoscopy procedures. It’s primarily used to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections of the respiratory tract. The test involves staining the bronchial wash sample and examining it under a microscope for the presence of acid-fast bacilli. While a positive result can indicate the presence of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a negative result doesn’t rule out infection. This test is often used in conjunction with culture tests and molecular methods for a comprehensive diagnosis of respiratory mycobacterial infections, especially in cases where sputum samples are difficult to obtain or have been negative.
