Description
This blood test measures the levels of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH), which is produced by the pituitary gland. ACTH stimulates the production and release of cortisol from the adrenal glands. The test is crucial in diagnosing disorders of the pituitary and adrenal glands, such as Cushing’s syndrome (excessive cortisol) and Addison’s disease (insufficient cortisol). It helps determine whether abnormal cortisol levels are due to a problem with the pituitary gland or the adrenal glands. The test is often used in conjunction with cortisol tests for a comprehensive evaluation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
