Description
This test measures adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in synovial fluid, which is found in joint spaces. It’s primarily used to diagnose tuberculous arthritis, an infection of the joints caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Elevated ADA levels in synovial fluid can strongly indicate tuberculosis infection. The test helps differentiate between infectious (particularly tuberculous) and non-infectious causes of joint effusion. It’s especially valuable in regions with high tuberculosis prevalence or when conventional diagnostic methods are inconclusive, aiding in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment initiation for joint pathologies.
