Description
This test measures adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in pleural fluid, which is found in the space surrounding the lungs. It’s primarily used to diagnose tuberculous pleuritis, an infection of the pleura caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Elevated ADA levels in pleural fluid can strongly indicate tuberculosis infection. The test helps differentiate between infectious (particularly tuberculous) and non-infectious causes of pleural effusion. It’s especially valuable in regions with high tuberculosis prevalence or when conventional diagnostic methods are inconclusive, aiding in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment initiation.
