Description
This test measures adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in peritoneal fluid, which is found in the abdominal cavity. It’s primarily used to diagnose tuberculous peritonitis, an infection of the peritoneum caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Elevated ADA levels in peritoneal fluid can strongly indicate tuberculosis infection. The test helps differentiate between infectious (particularly tuberculous) and non-infectious causes of ascites. It’s especially valuable in regions with high tuberculosis prevalence or when conventional diagnostic methods are inconclusive, aiding in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment initiation.
