Description
This test measures adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in pericardial fluid, which surrounds the heart. It’s primarily used to diagnose tuberculous pericarditis, an infection of the pericardium caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Elevated ADA levels in pericardial fluid can strongly indicate tuberculosis infection. The test helps differentiate between infectious (particularly tuberculous) and non-infectious causes of pericardial effusion. It’s especially valuable in regions with high tuberculosis prevalence or when conventional diagnostic methods are inconclusive, aiding in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment initiation.
