Glucose Challenge Test

Description

The Glucose Challenge Test is a preliminary screening test primarily used to identify pregnant women who may be at risk for gestational diabetes. The test involves the patient drinking a glucose solution containing 50 grams of glucose. After one hour, a blood sample is taken to measure the blood sugar level. This test doesn’t require fasting and can be done at any time of the day. If the blood glucose level is above a certain threshold (typically 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L), it indicates a higher risk of gestational diabetes, and a follow-up test, the Glucose Tolerance Test, is usually recommended. Early detection and management of gestational diabetes are crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby.
