Description
Cytology of Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) Fluid involves the microscopic examination of cells obtained from the lower respiratory tract through a bronchoscopy procedure. This test is valuable in diagnosing various lung diseases, including infections, inflammatory conditions, and lung cancers. During the procedure, saline is instilled into a small part of the lung and then recollected, bringing with it cells and other components from the air spaces. The fluid is then examined under a microscope to analyze the types and proportions of cells present, as well as any abnormal cells or microorganisms. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing conditions such as sarcoidosis, pneumonia, and lung cancer, especially when other diagnostic methods have been inconclusive.
