Description
The CD8 Count test measures the number of CD8 T-lymphocytes in the blood. CD8 cells, also known as cytotoxic T-cells or killer T-cells, play a crucial role in the cellular immune response by directly attacking and destroying infected or cancerous cells. This test is important for assessing overall immune function and is often used in conjunction with CD4 counts. Elevated CD8 counts can indicate an active immune response to viral infections or certain cancers. In HIV/AIDS patients, the CD8 count, along with the CD4 count, helps in monitoring disease progression and treatment effectiveness. It’s also useful in evaluating other immune-related conditions and certain types of lymphomas.
