Description
The Calcium, Serum test measures the total amount of calcium in the blood, including both ionized (free) and protein-bound calcium. Calcium is crucial for various bodily functions, including bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve signaling. This test is commonly used to screen for and monitor conditions related to calcium imbalance, such as hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, kidney disease, and certain cancers. While it provides valuable information about overall calcium status, it may not always reflect the level of biologically active calcium. In some cases, additional tests like ionized calcium may be necessary for a more complete assessment.
