Description
The CA 19.9 test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 19.9 in the blood. This protein is produced by pancreatic cancer cells and some other types of cancer cells. It’s primarily used as a tumor marker for pancreatic cancer, but can also be elevated in other gastrointestinal cancers such as colorectal, stomach, and bile duct cancers. The test is useful for monitoring treatment response, detecting cancer recurrence, and in some cases, aiding in the initial diagnosis when combined with other tests. However, it’s not recommended as a screening test for the general population due to its lack of specificity and sensitivity.
