Description
The Bullous Pemphigoid 230 test is an immunological assay that detects autoantibodies against the BP230 antigen, also known as BPAG1. BP230 is an intracellular protein that is part of the hemidesmosomal plaque, playing a role in maintaining skin integrity. In bullous pemphigoid, autoantibodies can target both BP180 and BP230. While BP180 antibodies are more common and pathogenic, the presence of BP230 antibodies can provide additional diagnostic certainty. This test is often used in conjunction with the BP180 test to enhance diagnostic accuracy for bullous pemphigoid. The combination of both tests increases sensitivity in detecting the disease, especially in cases where one antibody type might be absent or at low levels. BP230 antibodies are also found in some other autoimmune conditions, so clinical correlation is essential for accurate diagnosis.
