Description
This test is designed to detect the presence of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in guided aspirate samples. These samples are obtained through image-guided procedures, targeting specific body sites suspected of harboring mycobacterial infections. It’s used to diagnose extrapulmonary tuberculosis in locations such as lymph nodes, abscesses, or deep-seated lesions. The test involves staining the aspirate sample and examining it under a microscope for the presence of acid-fast bacilli. While a positive result can indicate the presence of mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a negative result doesn’t rule out infection. This test is often used in conjunction with culture tests and molecular methods for a comprehensive diagnosis of targeted mycobacterial infections.
